Last month Luray and I were on vacation in Canada and OF COURSE we had to go shopping for vintage goodies at the appropriately named Lakeshore Antiques and Treasures near Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON.

I never expect to find vintage tablecloths at thrift stores. The rare times when they do turn up are mini occasions for celebration. (No champagne involved, but it sure is exciting!)

Last week I stopped at a thrift store in the middle of the week and hit the vintage tablecloth jackpot. Take a peek:

Okay, it isn't a pile of pristine tablecloths with their original tags. I'm not complaining!

My guess is most of them belonged to the same household. I’m sure people who have the fun of shopping estate sales find piles like this all the time. Lucky you! Now we’re even.

I have to take back what I said

Yes, I have to take back what I said about the Golden Nugget Flea Market being on its last legs. On Memorial Day weekend it looked like a throwback to twenty years ago. Every single dealer table was taken. Parking was impossible. The place was buzzing with excitement.

Yesterday ManRay and I did a marathon of shopping starting at the Golden Nugget Flea Market in Lambertville NJ. I haven’t been there since last summer and was surprised by how much the market has changed. At one time it was considered the preeminent antiques market on the East Coast.

We woke up to a bright and sunny, if very cold, morning today. After half an hour outdoors with the dog, we warmed up with piping hot bowls of steel-cut oats and strawberries.

I started with a bright tablecloth of daisies in red, yellow, and green. That’s a lot of wow for only three colors!

Then there’s a yellow Lu-Ray plate. Because yellow is a happy color, of course. The really old Sterling China bowl is perfect for oatmeal because the thick hotel china holds the heat.

I like steel cut oats a lot, they’re filling and they warm you right up on a cold morning. But I don’t like standing over the stove stirring them for thirty minutes till they’re cooked. Most mornings I have better things to do to get everyone out the door to work and school.

So I cook oatmeal the lazy way: overnight in a crockpot. Easy!
